about

The arrival took place December 30, 2021 at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, the end of the beginning of a lengthy process that would result in Tokyo residence. It was also the middle of the pandemic. After being led through multiple checkpoints, checking for apps on phones and covid not in people, we were loaded onto a bus to the Hotel Villa Fontaigne (not the Villa Straylight) where the first 6 days of quarantine were to be performed, featuring room temperature bentos three times a day and enough Oi Ocha to create a sizable tower of undrunk tea. The remainder of quarantine and the remainder of the time the rest of the belongings were floating on the Pacific was spent in a tiny studio apartment in Hamamatsucho, until the day arrived which would take use to our permanent residence.

In tow during this time of travel was a 168hp modular synth system housed in a 1970s Samsonite briefcase, Thee Secret Samsonite Sound System, as well as a Zoom H6 recorder. The first of the tracks to make it onto this album were created prior to landing at the final destination, and the system was kept intact for the entire year. I wanted the album to keep a consitent sound, and wanted where possible for the tracks to evolve as my familiarity with the system grew. This album is an expression of this first year in Tokyo, leaving behind the old, embracing the new, leaving one country for another. Emigration. Immigration.

Other recordings were made on other equipment in the course of the year, but everything on this album was produced using the TSSSS, with the addition of a couple of modules in an 84hp skiff after settling down in Tokyo. In December of 2022, nearly a year after the journey began, I narrowed all the tracks down to the final eight, and cleaned them up to the best of my ability. I brought in Nathan Moody to provide his expertise in audio mastering to bring the tracks up to the quality you hear here.
