about

The alleyway was a prolonged cinema effect, the exit extending further with every step he took, draining his energy little by little, shortening his breath. He staggered over alternating planes of cracked concrete, worn by years of rain and footsteps, and beds of riverrock, which kicked up as his toes dragged through it, skittering across the other rocks and occasionally into the wall of the building that was supporting him. When he finally made it to the sidewalk on the main street, there was not a person in sight. He was all alone with the city, blinking at him incomprehensibly, alternating currents of non-existent automobiles and ghosts. The only human-esque figures were those flashing at the crosswalks, north-south. The entrance of the alleyway began to catch up with him now, narrowing his vision, filling it with sparkling pixels, and the rest faded away under flashing lights. He became one with the city, a passenger in her veins.

This was the first of my performances which married the Meng Qi Wing Pinger with The Human Comparator Recursive Machine and the modular system. The tonal percussion throughout the piece is sourced from the Wing Pinger, and the scraping breathing noise at the beginning is primarily the Recursive Machine. The radio static noise at the beginning of the piece mixed with the other noise is a result of passing the Soma Laboratory Ether over various elements on the performance space. The track has an off kilter feel that ebbs and flows between time signatures due to a mixture of 4/4 and 3/4 clocks being fed to various pieces of equipment (including the drum sequencers Grids and Zularic Repetitor).

This track was performed and streamed live as part of Resonant Frequencies 033, a Bay Area Electronic Music Open Mic program that ran exclusively online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
